Social English - helping others (UN admin costs)
Self-help: how to record and improve your
vocabulary...and don't forget to record progress in your diary!
The United Nations (UN) core functions cost $1.25billion a year (in New York,
Geneva, Vienna and 5 Regional Commissions)There are 8,700 UN Secretarial Staff (working for UNICEF, UNDP, UNFPA, WFP,
WHO) - see the UN location map at www.un.org/aroundworld/map
1. With a friend, talk about:
* the cost of employing 8,700 staff in high-cost cities (NY, Geneva, Vienna
etc)
* UN locations (2 in USA, 2 Africa, 6 Europe, 2 South America, 3 Caribbean, 2
Far East, 1 Canada)
2. Imagine you are told to move the UN from high-cost offices in civilised
countries to poor countries (so that UN staff obtained a better idea of world
problems). Where would you move the offices and staff? To give you some ideas

3. Now look at the next discussion subject. Who really benefits from the UN
infrastructure?
