Iraq: oil genocide: (also
,
, ,
)
1. Politics are complicated - particularly when they involve oil revenues. Sadam
Hussain was a 'good guy' (ie supported by Western Governments) until he invaded
Kuwait. Then he was a 'bad guy' (but he seemed to be still supported by the West when
Sadam's opposition tried to overthrow him).
2. The reason for sanctions is apparently related to 'unilateral
destruction activities' capabilities. Which Western countries supplied the
original components and weapons?
3. Economic sanctions against Iraq since 1990 don't appear to have affected Sadam Hussain
but there are estimates that 500,000 children have died because of malnutrition,
lack of medicines, US and UK bombing raids which still take place and the
effects of uranium used during the war against
Iraq (increased patients suffering from leukemia, congenital deformation,
abortions, herpes and cancer). There are claimed to be 270,680 kgs of
depleted uranium wastes still on the ground - the equivalent of 7 nuclear bombs.
4. Imagine 500,000 children have died needlessly in your country since 1990.
5. Discuss.
