www.e-profesores.com Internet English - petrol tax (and why some Governments may find it difficult to encourage alternatives to petrol!) Self-help: how to improve your vocabulary...and don't forget to record progress in your diary! 1. Ask your friend or teacher "Who makes the most profit from selling a litre of petrol?" (a) the owner of the petrol station, b) the oil companies, c) the producers of oil or d) National Governments (ie fuel tax)) 2. When unleaded petrol was 86.5 pence a litre in the United Kingdom (UK) a newspaper offered the following cost breakdown per litre (in pence): Britain France Spain Retailer 2p 3p 3p Oil companies 4p 3p 0p Production cost 19p 18p 19p TAX 61.5p 55p 30p Cost to client 86.5p 79p 52p 3. With a friend discuss * If these figures are correct and the Government in Britain receives 71% of the cost of a litre of unleaded petrol (fuel tax), should the average car owner complain about the oil producing countries? * French farmers have complained about the cost of fuel, blocked access to petrol stations and stopped the French Government from collecting fuel tax (70% of each litre, if these figures are correct). Is it right to protest - or should consumers trust the Government to protect consumer interests? * The Spanish Government appears to receive only 58% of the cost of each litre. Should it use Spain's enormous 'solar energy reserves' to encourage ? (In Cataluña all new buildings must include solar panels...)
